Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines are a class of drugs which are depressant drugs. This means that they slow down and interfere with the functioning of the brain and the body.
Benzodiazepines are prescription medicines which act as minor tranquillisers.
They may be prescribed to help people with stress, anxiety or sleep problems.
Benzodiazepines are intended for short-term use, up to a maximum of 3-4 weeks.
There are several drugs in the Benzodiazepine family and they are classified based on the length of their effect in the body. Short-acting Benzodiazepines have stronger withdrawal or ‘come down’ effects and can be more addictive than long-acting ones.
Benzodiazepines are known by their drug name, but they may also be known by their brand or trade name.
